Competitive Rate Analysis
At Commonwealth our goal is to
help shippers lower their transportation costs. We
achieve this by first using our tools –
Waybill
Tools and Commonwealth Rate Costing System (CRCS)– to measure the market rates and the
railroad’s actual cost and analyze each relative to
your rate for each of your movements. We use market
data provided by the Surface Transportation Board
for our benchmark studies using Waybill Tools. We
also use our customer’s internal data along with
Commonwealth's CRCS proprietary software which
analyze the railroad’s costs using to derive Revenue
to Variable Cost ratios. Using one or both of these
studies we identify your rates which can be reduced
and set target rates in preparation for
negotiations.
Contract Negotiation,
Drafting and Review
After analyzing and identifying
target rates, we assist our clients in using this
information to negotiate competitive rates and other
favorable terms which are memorialized in a
transportation contract. At Commonwealth we have
the capability to assist clients in every step of
this process from targeting rates, to negotiations
with the railroads, all the way through drafting and
signing a customized contract.
We have negotiated
transportation contracts with every class I railroad
and several short line railroads. We have crafted
custom contracts who’s bounds stretch across North
America with traffic from Mexico to Canada and from
coast to coast in the United States. Commonwealth
regularly tackles complicated transload procedures,
other logistical hurdles and even drafts
storage track leases.

Once the rail contract is in
place Commonwealth continues its full service
approach by managing the logistics of our client’s
transportation according to each client’s personal
needs. Commonwealth consultants have over 60 years
combined experience in synchronizing complex
transportation schedules and overcoming logistical
challenges presented by all types of shipping,
especially rail. Our consultants are experienced in
tracking, diverting, billing and obtaining storage
for railcars.
